As someone who works for a specialist hard disk recovery company I have written this short article in the hope that it will be instructive to those who are thinking about trusting their failed hard drives to one of those “£99 or less” companies. It is very common story indeed, in fact it is repeated several times a week at a minimum.
The client called us and described a drive that had previously been fine but he had noticed over the last few months that the speed of access had been declining. Finally he found that the drive would not get past attempting to load the operating system.
This is a classic symptom of a drive which is developing bad sectors (by far the most common form of failure for all hard drives). When caught early and the appropriate remedial action is taken (the drive absolutely must be cloned before anything else is done) then this is a situation from which most if not all of the user data should be recoverable. Unfortunately in this instance he had sent it in to a local IT company which advertised data recovery services.
They then did the very worst thing you can do to a hard drive in this situation which was that they spent 3 to 4 days running recovery software directly on the failing drive. Such recovery software reads, re-reads and then re-reads again and again all of the sectors on the hard drive attempting to piece together data as it goes.
This is a hugely effective way of turning readable sectors into bad sectors and once this has happened there is nothing that anyone, even the experts can do to help.So by the time we had received it, the drive was simply a mass of bad sectors.
Unfortunately in this instance there is nothing that can be done, the frustrating thing is of course knowing that had we received this drive first it would have been a very different story. If you are in any doubt about what has happened to your hard drive then talk to a data recovery specialist before you do anything else.

I have known my wife since I was sixteen years old, both of us are now in our fifties. When we were young we loved to have fun, we would party, smoke and drink from friday to sunday every week.
Even though we ate what we wanted our bodies still remained toned and slim. However, as we got a little older our metabolisms began to slow down and we started to become fat.
These days, we dont enjoy the same freedom, in fact, we have only kept a little of it. We both have hypertension and we need to lower our blood pressures. 120 over 80 mm Hg is the average blood pressure level, we are working towards achieving this by minimising our alcohol intake and have both stopped smoking cigarettes.
We have also taken steps to improve our diets. Sodium (table salt) plays a big part in raising blood pressure so we have completely eliminated it and incorporated more fresh fruits and vegetables into our diets.
These steps combined with prescription hypertension drugs should eventually bring our blood pressures back down to a more normal level.
We hope this will be a lesson to others to look after themselves and develop a healthy lifestyle while they are still young.

I just found out that you can now apply for fertility loans. I have a lot of mixed emotions about this to be honest. I think it is nice to see that people who are unable to have children on their own are now able to get financial assistance in acquiring the treatments they want.
